Tocardo BV (QED Naval’s JV) is a key partner in the EU-funded Offshore for Sure project, working to unlock one of the most comprehensive datasets ever captured from operational tidal turbines. This project builds on over six continuous years of deployment at the Dutch Government’s Oosterschelde Tidal Power (OTP) project, where Tocardo turbines delivered energy to the grid and long-term, reliable performance in demanding marine conditions.
This extensive dataset, covering performance, loads, durability, lifecycle behaviour, and environmental interactions is now being analysed and interpreted as part of the Offshore for Sure programme. It provides a uniquely valuable evidence base to accelerate the commercial readiness of tidal stream technology.
QED Naval’s role focuses on integrating these real-world learnings into the development of future tidal platforms and commercial arrays, including our next-generation Subhub. By applying hard evidence from multi-year operation, we reduce risk, improve reliability, and lower the levelised cost of energy for future projects in the UK, Europe, and international markets. Jeremy Smith CEO of QED Naval stated ‘This is unique in sector data and learning which is of significant value to us as we work with our insurers, investors and finance projects such as our Morlais site in Wales, with UK government contracts for difference in place’
This work directly supports Europe’s ambition to scale predictable renewable energy sources and strengthen energy security. A project team photo and ongoing updates will be published as the programme progresses.
